How to Save Your Belongings from Water Damage

How to Save Your Belongings from Water Damage

Water damage can be a really scary thing to experience. What do you do if your belongings get wet and moldy? The answer is simple: don't panic! We have put together this blog post to help give you some tips and tricks for saving your possessions from water damage. Read on for more information about what to do in the event of a flood, how to prevent water damage, and more.

Keep Your Valuable at a High Point during a Flood

During a flood, the first thing you are likely to think about is what valuables can be saved. If there isn't an immediate threat of your home being flooded, try moving them to higher points in order to keep them safe from water damage. The main things that should be moved would be anything digital or electronic-based because these could easily become destroyed by moisture in the air. You also want to make sure any important documents and photos are kept out of harm's way since they contain sensitive information which needs protecting! Keeping items at high points will help ensure they stay dry during a flood so don't forget this step if one becomes imminent!

Seal Your Belongings in Zip lock Bags before Putting Them Away

If you feel like there's a chance of your belongings getting wet, it is important to seal them up in zip lock bags before putting them away. This will help ensure they stay dry during the flood and any furniture or other items won't get damaged by moisture either! If something does happen, at least you can be more confident that your valuables are safe inside their packaging.

Remove All Your Belongings from the Basement

If you have a basement, it is best to remove all your belongings from that area. This might seem like an extreme way of preventing water damage, but basements are known for being susceptible to flooding so there's no point in taking any risks! If you don't want anything getting wet or damaged because of the flood, this is one simple step which will go a long way toward keeping everything nice and dry during the event.

Avoid Keeping Anything outside the House during Flood Warning

If you live in a flood-prone area, it is best to avoid keeping anything outside the house during a flood warning. This means that if you have something like an outdoor fridge or freezer, leave them where they are because there's no point putting your belongings at risk of being damaged by water. If the items do get wet and moldy, you will still be able to use them but discarding them might not even be necessary!

Don’t Put Your Furniture near Pipes or Drainage Systems

If you have a lot of furniture in the house, it is best to put them away from pipes or drainage systems. If they get wet, these items can cause water damage and moldy smells within your home which no one wants! Try placing all heavy pieces further back against walls where they won't be near anything that will cause problems when there's a flood. This simple step could save several possessions from being damaged by moisture during floods so make sure any big pieces are kept well clear of problem areas!

The Risks of Not Hiring a Professional Water Damage Restoration Company

When a home or business suffers from water damage, it is important to call in the pros. Professionals are skilled at drying out wet materials and restoring them back to their original state. This includes furniture, flooring, drywall, sheetrock and more. Not only does this save money in repairs by not having to replace damaged items but also saves time when trying to get things up and running again quickly. However, there are risks when deciding not hire a professional restoration company for your water damage needs!

You May End Up Causing More Damage

You should never attempt to clean up water damage yourself because it could lead to more damage. The longer you go without getting professionals involved, the worse your home may get and if mold sets in then that will add on even more expenses. This is why quickly hiring a restoration company like SERVPRO can help save money by preventing further deterioration of materials and structure.

You Are Liable For Everything

Not hiring a service also does not take any liability off of you if something goes wrong while trying to dry out items yourself at home or business. The last thing anyone wants are expensive repairs on top of having their place flooded to begin with.

You May Not Be Able To Control the Mold Outbreak

If you do not get help right away, your wet materials could lead to the growth of bacteria or even toxic black mold that would leave you needing professional assistance sooner than later. This will just cost more money in both time and resources. You should always hire professionals when dealing with wet materials because they have experience in doing so safely without ruining other things around it.

It Will Cost You More In The Long Run

The last thing you want is to start spending more money than what was originally bargained for on top of having your property damaged. Even if the emergency restoration companies do not charge a small fee upfront, it will just cost you more in the long run and that's why hiring professionals quickly after water damage happens is always recommended.

So Go Ahead and Hire a Professional Restoration Company like SERVPRO

Hiring professionals quickly after getting help is always recommended for the best results in saving your home or business from further destruction and to prevent mold outbreaks that could be dangerous. Save money by avoiding repairs on top of damages, save time trying to get things up and running again faster, avoid riskier procedures when dealing with wet materials at home or business while being liable if something goes wrong and lastly you will just end up paying more than originally bargained for since its better safe than sorry! So if you are looking for an excellent experience in restoration for water damage, look no further than SERVPRO.

When Should You Contact a Water Damage Restoration Company?

When Should You Contact a Water Damage Restoration Company?

If you’ve experienced water damage in your home, it can be hard to know where to start. Should you try to clean up the mess yourself? Call a plumber? Contact an insurance company? Get estimates from several restoration companies? The answer is that first and foremost, if there is standing water or significant amounts of water coming out of your pipes, contact a professional 24-hour emergency service ASAP. Once the immediate danger has been taken care of, call one or two reputable restoration companies for estimates on how much it will cost to get your home back into shape.

When should you call a water damage restoration company? You might be asking yourself that question because your basement flooded and the carpet is soaked or your washing machine overflowed and leaked into the kitchen. Not sure if you need to call a water damage restoration company? We're here to help! In this blog post, we'll discuss when it's time to contact a professional for assistance with water damages in your home so that you can reduce any long-term effects of these types of disasters.

When the Damage Is Too Much For You to Handle On Your Own

Sometimes the damage can be too much to handle for you on your own and you know you need a professional to get rid of your water problem. If the damage is too much for you to handle on your own, call a water damage restoration company immediately.

When You Have Standing Water or Pipes That Are Leaking

If there's standing water in your home or if there are pipes that have been compromised and are leaking, it's important that you contact a 24-hour emergency service as soon as possible so they can get out to your location ASAP. The longer the water sits inside of your walls or carpeting, the more likely it will be that mold will begin to grow and/or cause structural problems within the building itself. If this occurs, not only do you run a higher risk of developing health issues due to exposure to growths caused by mold spores but also having all this water damage repaired will be a lot more expensive.

When You Need a Fast Turnaround Time for Repairs to Your Home or Business

Not only is it important that you contact a professional as soon as possible, but you also want to find one who can offer same-day service or at least 24 hours’ notice of when they plan on arriving for repairs. The faster the turnaround time from the moment your call has been made until help arrives, the better off your home and property will be in terms of minimizing any further long-term effects after water damage occurs. Also keep in mind that if there are outlets or appliances which have been destroyed due to this occurrence, not calling a restoration company quickly enough could mean being without these vital amenities for quite some time.

Ways to Secure Your Home during a Flood

Ways to Secure Your Home during a Flood

The last thing you want to worry about when there is a flood in your area is whether or not your home will be safe. Floods can happen anywhere and at any time, so it's important to take precautions beforehand to make sure that you are fully prepared for the worst. That being said, here are some ways you can secure your house during a flood:

Grade your lawn away from the house

If you have a slope in your lawn leading up to the house then this will make it easier for water to enter. Take some time before the flood season begins and grade your yard away from your home so that there is less chance of water collecting around your foundation.

Install window well covers

Floods tend to happen quickly, which means that if there's anything obstructing windows on lower levels (like window wells) - they could prevent people inside the home from getting out safely when needed. To avoid any potential risks or problems, install window well covers that can be removed easily by anyone who needs them during an emergency situation. This way everyone stays safe while waiting for rescue teams arrive!

Create sand bags

Sandbags are great because they can be taken down and put back up again as many times as you need them, which is perfect if there's a flood season that follows multiple storms. When first approaching your home during a flood it might look like the only thing left to do is abandon ship in favor of higher ground - but by creating sand bags around entry points (like doors) you'll greatly reduce the possibility of flooding in the home when things finally start to recede.

Leave space between siding & mulch

In severe cases, flooding can even cause mulch to start decomposing which is a major risk for mold as well as other health problems. In order to avoid these risks, leave about an inch of space around the base of your house so that water has room to flow away from it instead of collecting at its foundation. This will reduce chances of damage and ensure that everyone inside remains safe during a flood!

Block All Entrances and leave no space for the water to come in

Make sure there is no space for the water to collect around your home's foundation or windows and doors. Put anything you can find to block entrances in front of all doorways. It is important that you do not allow any gaps between items as this will encourage flooding into the house when it occurs again. This also includes allowing plenty of room around windows so that they are able to open safely during an emergency situation! If possible - leave at least a foot gap from siding on the side of your house nearest where flood waters are likely to enter (like near garage doors) so that everyone inside has enough time to escape if necessary before water rises too high within the home.

Blanket all windows with plastic sheeting so the water cannot sleep in.

Once you have blocked off entrances, it is important to protect any openings that are left vulnerable by covering them up as much as possible. If there are glass windows on your home - use plastic sheeting or tarps over top of these until the flood waters subside and remove once problem has been averted! High winds can cause this material to fly away during a storm making it even more vital that everyone inside knows how best to secure their house properly before things get out of hand! Make sure all roof vents are securely covered just like other unprotected areas around your home's exterior too if at all possible because anything not protected will be especially susceptible during floods.

Things that a water restoration company can do for you

Things that a water restoration company can do for you

When you have water damage in your home, it is very important to get the issue resolved quickly. This will help prevent mold and mildew from growing on wet surfaces around your house. It can also reduce the chance of more serious health problems when they are not treated properly. If you need a water restoration company to come out and take care of this for you, here is what they might do:

Assess damage to belongings

They take a look around your home to see what might be ruined, including furniture and flooring materials. This helps you know how much restoration work needs to happen in order for things to go back to normal again.

Remove sopping carpets

They will take out any wet carpeting and get it dried in a way that prevents mold from growing on the fiber. In some cases, they may need to be replaced. This is only if the water damage was severe enough for this to happen. If not, then you can save some money on the restoration work.

Clean and sanitize surfaces

They will wash down any walls or other places where water damage happened to remove dirt, mildew, mold, bacteria and other germs that might cause illness for you or your family members if they are not killed through cleaning. Then, they leave everything to dry out in the open air for a while.

Fix any water damage that happened

If there was plumbing damage or some other type of issue, they can fix it right away so you don't have to worry about further problems with the house down the road when these issues are ignored. This is necessary if your home is going to be safe for you and your family.

Provide warranty on all work

They offer warranties for any restoration services they do, which means if anything goes wrong in the future then they will be able to come back and fix it for you.

Dehumidify the air to reduce moisture levels in your home

When you find out that there is a problem with water damage, it is important to take care of this as soon as possible. If it goes untreated for too long, then your house may start to smell bad or have mold growing on the surfaces. This is when you should call a water restoration company to come out and do the work for you in an urgent manner. They will be able to remove the standing water, which means that there won't be any more surface damage done or mold growing on your walls or furniture.

These are just some of the things that they might do for you when it is time to call in professionals. There are many other services out there as well so be sure to find out what else they can offer in addition to the ones mentioned above.

1/10/2022 (Permalink)

With the recent snowstorms over the past month, homeowners should be on the lookout for groundwater in their basements. Groundwater can seep up from the ground into your home, which can cause extensive damage to your property. How To Get Rid of Odors in a Water Damaged Building

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

Water of all kinds can cause damage to your building. While contaminated water may be more likely to cause lingering odors, clean water can also contribute by facilitating mold growth. If you are noticing bad smells after water damage, the following steps can help remove them.

  1. Clean Surfaces

Both flooding and sewage loss can bring black water into your building. This water is highly contaminated and can contain bacteria, mud, waste and other debris. As a result, it can carry with it unpleasant odors. Everything that this water has come into contact with will be thoroughly cleaned by SERVPRO Mount Ephraim/Bellmawr both to reduce these odors as well as to prevent bacteria from spreading within the building.

  1. Perform Mold Remediation

Mold spores that have been brought into the building by contaminated water, as well as those already present, will grow quickly in a wet environment. Infestations of this fungus can then create a musty odor. Both the mold growth and the smell can be effectively removed by SERVPRO Mount Ephraim/Bellmawr with our professional equipment.

  1. Replace Damaged Materials

Materials like insulation and drywall can easily absorb large amounts of floodwater. These are not easily cleaned, resulting in bad smells that stick around as well as damage to the building. Removing and replacing is what SERVPRO does to these materials, to reduce lingering odors.

  1. Remove Odors From the Air

If you have tried the previous steps but still haven’t quite removed all of the bad smells, then you may need to clean the air inside the building. Using professional equipment, we can remove bacteria and other contaminants to create a clean and fresh-smelling environment.

After you have experienced water damage, it can take some time to return your building to its previous condition. Everything should be cleaned thoroughly and any mold growth should be removed. In most cases, it is best to have this done by SERVPRO Mount Ephraim/Bellmawr who has the necessary training and equipment to get the job done properly.

Washing Machine Water Damage

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Washing machines are one of the most common sources of water damage in the home, and the damage can be costly, reaching high costs.

Since each washing machine has multiple ways of causing water damage with multiple components that break down, below are some things that most commonly cause leaks:

Plugged floor drain, before disassembling your washing machine, check that the floor drain is clear of debris like lint that can build up over time. Water on your floor may be the result of a clogged drain and not an issue with the washer itself.

External supply hoses, start a fill cycle on your machine. You should look for drips around the water supply connection hose. If the hoses themselves seem to be free of corrosion or rust but are still dripping, try replacing the internal washers to create a tighter seal.

Internal hoses, if the supply hoses are not leaking, check the internal hoses that connect the inlet valve to the tub by opening the washer cabinet. Cracked or perforated hoses may be the problem.

Seals, normal wear and tear can cause door boot seals to crack or rip. If your machine is leaking during either the fill or agitation portion of the wash cycle, damaged tub seals could be the cause and will need to be replaced.

How to Handle Water Saturation Problems

2/27/2021 (Permalink)

How to handle water saturation problems.

Unfortunately, plumbing wears down over time. Older material or simply heavy wear and tear damage the structure, exposing the commercial property to leaks and breaks. The water damage requires prompt attention as it could lead to further damage therefore, property owners should do the following three things when faced with water saturation.

  1. Determine How Much of the Space Was Impacted

Rely on a trusted and experienced company like SERVPRO Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr to examine how much of the room was impacted. When soaked drywall or flooring sits too long, the area grows musty and becomes a breeding ground for fungus. A SERVPRO technician uses sophisticated equipment to diagnose contaminated sections, avoiding future growths. Following established guidelines and protocols, the examiner can provide a thorough overview of the space’s issues.

  1. Assess Materials

Mold thrives on water damage, quickly multiplying and spreading with the building. Minimize trouble by eliminating drenched, porous objects. These things cannot be thoroughly disinfected since the organisms absorb deep within. SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr will follow standards put in place, to dispose of infected material.

  1. Focus on Drying Out Space

Effective water cleanup treatment is possible for certain items. Extract as much water as possible. Then make a call to SERVPRO who will utilize the appropriate equipment to handle the situation.

When water damage is spotted, move into action, focusing on getting rid of the dampness as best as possible. Controlling that factor is vital to getting things back in order. Water damage doesn’t have business hours and disaster can strike at any time, luckily, SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr is open 24/7 ready to help you and give you the best experience when dealing with disaster. What is Secondary Water Damage?

2/27/2021 (Permalink)

What is Secondary Water Damage

Hidden moisture can do significant damage to many components in your home. If moisture is left behind after a water issue arises, the following long-term damage can begin to fester.

Mold: This quick growing microorganism only needs 24 hours to start growing which can lead to its spores spreading within days. Even a small patch of wet carpet left unchecked can create the right conditions for black mold to grow.

Electrical: Water that has seeped into the wall can affect the outlets. If water gets trapped, it may increase the potential for electrical shock.

Corrosion: Hidden pipes and fixtures in the home made of metal can begin to rust and corrode in wet conditions, eventually leading to potential bigger water issues like a pipe burst.

Wood Rot: As well as being an inviting place for black mold to grow, the wood elements of your home will begin to rot if not properly dried. This may lead to a loss in the home’s structural integrity.

Mitigate the Risk

SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr provides timely and professional assessments and cleanup which can be necessary to avoid hidden damage from becoming a catastrophic accident. When there is high humidity, it is even more important to ensure that dehumidification is done to stop water damage from spreading everywhere.  Upon their arrival SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr will extract any standing water, remove saturated materials from the affected areas, and use air movers. Opening windows, depending on the humidity levels outside may slow down secondary damage until SERVPRO Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr arrives.

While a small water issue may not seem like anything to worry about, hidden damage may be lurking. Immediately addressing the issue can help keep the situation from escalating to a huge problem. SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr will address the situation and answer any questions you have, through the drying process.

Condensate pumps on Air Conditioners failing

4/24/2020 (Permalink)

What is a Condensate Pump for an air conditioning unit?

The condensate pump on an air conditioner is a specific type of pump that pumps water out of your house that the AC removes from the air.

A broken or clogged pump will result in significant water damage.

If the pump is broken, damaged or rusty than the water is not being drained outside. Normally they are reliable and have a long life so this usually occurs in older AC units.

When there is a blockage in the pump it causes water to back up into the drain and overflow. Most common causes for a blockage would be mold, dust, dirt or sludge. There are ways to unclog these pumps using a wet/dry vac. But the most guaranteed way would be to have a professional come out and use a special vacuum to suck the blockage material.

If you have not noticed that your Condensate Pump on you air conditioning unit failed until it is too late than chances are you may already have some water damage.

Condensate pumps on Air Conditioners failing

4/10/2019 (Permalink)

What Is A Sump Pump

1/18/2019 (Permalink)

sump pump is a pump used to drain excess water that has built up in a water collecting sump basin, usually located in the basement of homes.  Sump pumps are used in areas where basement flooding happens regularly and to solve dampness problems where there is a high water table. These pumps direct water away from the house, to where it no longer poses a flood risk to the home.

Sump pumps can fail for a variety of reasons.  Below is a list of the most common reasons your sump pump can fail.

·    POWER FAILURE- sump pumps run off electricity.  If your power goes out during heavy rains and storms the sump pump will not be able to operate and your basement could possibly flood.  Having a backup generator can be helpful in saving you a headache later.

·         NOT THE RIGHT SIZE- you would think it wouldn’t matter if the pump was too big or too small…BUT you would be wrong.  If the pump is too big in can cause it to work too hard and will lessen the life of your pump.  If the pump is too small, it can be ineffective at removing all the water and will work harder to keep up which can also lessen the life of your pump.  Make sure your sump pump is adequate for the area and the circumstances.

·      FAULTY INSTALLATION- sump pumps need to be installed exactly right.  If they are done improperly it can lead to problems down the line… and possibly a wet basement.  Make sure to follow the manufactures instructions correctly to ensure a proper installation.

·         FROZEN OR CLOGGED DISCHARGE LINES- although you can’t stop the line from freezing you can help prevent problems when it does.  Adding a special grated drain closer to your house to allow for water to get out if there is a blockage further down the line.

·      LACK OF MAINTENANCE- maintenance is the KEY!!! Remember this.  It is recommended by professionals to check your sump pump quarterly.  Use a vinegar solution to clean the pump and remove any dirt and debris.  Check the float switch to make sure it is not blocked and is operational and clean all vents and air holes.  Regular maintenance will help maintain your sump pump and address any issues before they become major problems.

·         PRODUCT DEFECT- although rare, defective sump pumps can happen.  Make sure to test your sump pump after installation to make sure it runs smoothly and correctly.

Sump pumps are a great tool in helping to keep your basement dry.  BUT  if you find yourself in a wet and soggy basement due to a failed sump pump… Call SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim/Bellmawr and we will make it all go away!

Cold Temperatures Bring Broken Pipes

1/4/2019 (Permalink)

With the past couple of weeks being in freezing temperatures make sure to check your pipes periodically so they don't burst. Check all of your pipes when you have a chance but do not put it off till it's too late. Water pipes commonly burst when the water inside them expands as it gets close to freezing, and this causes an increase in pressure inside the pipe. When the pressure gets too high for the pipe to contain, it ruptures. In order to help protect your pipes you can insulate them. If this happens to your home there is nothing to fear because SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim/ Bellmawr is here to help you through this rough time.

Washing Machine Failures in Audubon

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

When your washing machine hose breaks make sure you call the experts at SERVPRO of Mount Ephraim / Bellmawr with their highly trained staff who are experts at water restoration. Washing machine failures can cost homeowners more than $5,000 in insurance claims.

Make sure to always inspect your washing machine you can do that by checking the hoses for any  tearing and if you have rubber hoses make sure to run out to a hardware store and pick up stainless steel braided hoses they will not break as easy as a rubber one would. Most breaks on a washing machine occur in one specific area: couplings. In a process called "razoring," the pressure of the water flowing over the couplings gradually cause an unrolling. This causes the coupling to bend, creating a ragged edge that eventually cuts open the hose at the connection point.

  •    Class 2. With a fast evaporation rate, this level affects an entire room, carpeting, or cushioning, the wetness has wicked up the walls at least 12”, and there is moisture remaining in structural materials.

TOP REASONS WHY SUMP PUMPS FAIL

5/6/2016 (Permalink)

sump pump is a pump used to drain excess water that has built up in a water collecting sump basin, usually located in the basement of homes.

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED A FLOOD DAMAGE OR WATER DAMAGE IN YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS?

5/6/2016 (Permalink)

FLOODED BASEMENT

If you have ever dealt with flood damage, or have needed water removed from your basement, then you know the mess that water damage can leave in your home. What you do during the first 48 hours after a flood or water damage is critical to minimizing the damage.  Listed below are some great tips to making sure YOU do all the RIGHT things!

What you can do until help arrives

After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be safety first:

  • Is it safe to stay in the house?
  • Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.
  • Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

What To Do After Flooding

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Freezing Pipes – Source of water damage

    2/8/2016 (Permalink)

    Broken Pipe Water Damage Restoration

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage.  A burst pip can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.  If not addressed mold can develop and further damage a home.

The photos show the damage caused by an exterior pipe that burst and resulting water and mold damage.
