Winter Storms Bring Raising Water Table

With the recent snowstorms over the past month, homeowners should be on the lookout for groundwater in their basements. Due to the snow that has been falling recently the water table is higher than expected, which can cause flooding in basements and crawlspaces. Groundwater can seep up from the ground into your home, which can cause extensive damage to your property. If your home does experience flooding here are some tips to stop secondary damage as you wait for help to arrive.
- Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
- Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
- Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
- Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
- Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
- Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
- Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
- Gather loose items from floors.
- Turn off electricity in the affected area from the circuit breaker
